The purpose of the school boards and Navajo District schools is to provide a culturally relevant, high-quality education to students in the Navajo Nation. They aim to prepare students with the knowledge, skills and behaviors needed to succeed in the opportunities of tomorrow. Their goal is to help students become healthy and successful individuals, who can lead their communities and sovereign nations into a thriving future while preserving their unique cultural identities.

Specifically, the school boards and Navajo District schools have the following purposes:

  • Academic Excellence: Striving to ensure all students achieve or surpass academic proficiency levels in core subjects such as reading, English Language Arts (ELA), science and mathematics.
  • Safe and Secure Environment: Providing a safe and secure learning environment by reducing violence and substance abuse incidents and promoting students' physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
  • Student Attendance: Enhancing student attendance rates to ensure regular participation that meets or exceeds the attendance rates of rural schools in the United States.
  • Professional Development:  Offering robust and ongoing professional development, requiring appropriate certification, recruiting and retaining highly qualified educators, and developing leadership using best practices.
  • High School Graduation: Achieving a high school graduation rate of 95% or higher to prepare graduates for postsecondary education or career opportunities.
  • Cultural Preservation: Preserving and promoting the unique cultural identities of the Navajo Nation by providing curriculum and instruction in tribal languages and/or cultures, as approved by the local school boards.
  • Collaboration and Engagement: Fostering collaboration and engagement among schools, parents/guardians, and the community to support each child's educational experience and ensure that the needs and interests of students are met.
  • Accountability and Continuous Improvement: Establishing performance standards for quality schools, conducting ongoing comprehensive analyses, and implementing strategies for continuous improvement so that all students benefit from an effective, efficient, transparent and accountable education system.
