Overview
Student Life at Ojo Encino Day School
Ojo Encino Day School students benefit from our Navajo community’s unique teaching and learning strategies and opportunities. Students follow a holistic curriculum that prepares them for high school, higher education and beyond. Dedicated teams of educator’s guide students through our educational program, which incorporates the four pillars of the Navajo Plan to promote student achievement.
Pillar 1: Continuous Improvement Using Data
Use data from standards-based assessments to improve effective instruction, student learning and achievement.
Pillar 2: Leadership and Decision-Making for Change
Build leadership’s capacity to implement innovative changes to foster student achievement.
Pillar 3: Curriculum and Instruction
Develop a strong curriculum using college and career readiness standards and build teacher capacity to deliver effective instruction, which will increase student achievement.
Pillar 4: School, Parents and Community
Implement innovative strategies developed through the collaborative efforts of the school, parents/guardians and community to support each child’s educational experience.
Ojo Encino Day School student life includes diverse activities and experiences throughout the school year. Our well-rounded kindergarten through 8th-grade students participate in clubs, activities, organizations and academic disciplines that develop their young minds, bodies and spirits. Our young Braves benefit from various learning initiatives and life skill development programs.
FACE Program
Many of our students will start learning long before they reach the classroom. The Family and Child Education program provides infant, preschool and early childhood education services to boost academic success. Parents/guardians may also benefit from our FACE program’s parenting skills training, adult workshops and career readiness programs.
Art/Music
Ojo Encino Day School supports and develops student artists and artisans with a curriculum encouraging artistic and cultural expression. Students familiarize themselves with Native musical instruments and songs, traditional dance choreography, and cultural arts and craftsmanship, introducing new ways to engage with their heritage and community.
Athletics/PE Programs
Athletics and physical education programs help students develop their minds, bodies and spirits. Sports competitions strengthen students’ confidence, character and community. Recreational activities are provided to promote healthy living, leadership skills, sportsmanship and teamwork among students. Many students discover new talents and interests.
Navajo Language/Culture
Ojo Encino Day School’s teachers, staff and community members collaborate to design a curriculum to educate students in the Navajo language and culture. With the assistance of Tribal leadership, school educators and community elders, students develop their identity, increase cultural connections and build community support systems.
STEM
Students who enjoy solving problems, conducting experiments, and participating in construction projects participate in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics programs. This early introduction to STEM prepares our Braves for a 21st-century life, education and career. Ojo Encino Day School offers students valuable exposure and a solid foundation in STEM studies.
21st Century Program
The 21st Century Program creates Navajo community learning centers outside regular school hours. Students participate in various enrichment activities, including math and science, recreational activities, practical life skills, and more. Much of the 21st Century Program introduces knowledge bases that are inaccessible to their community.
After-school tutoring
After-school tutoring programs give students the additional time and attention they may need in a subject. Students who require more one-on-one attention benefit from the assistance of our after-school tutoring staff. The after-school tutoring program ensures that every student receives the aid needed to advance on time and with the rest of their classmates.
